Acute Childhood Illnesses
Prompt assessment and treatment when illness strikes suddenly, with same-day appointments available.
Acute Childhood Illnesses
Children can go from fine to feverish within an hour, and it is rarely convenient. When illness strikes suddenly, prompt and careful assessment matters.
Dr Angela Colquhoun evaluates and treats a wide range of acute childhood illnesses, with same-day appointments available when you call early enough in the day, so a worrying symptom does not have to wait until the next scheduled visit.
What Counts As An Acute Illness?
This includes fever, respiratory infections, ear and throat infections, vomiting, diarrhoea, rashes and other sudden health concerns. Each child receives a thorough examination and an individual treatment plan, with clear guidance on home care and what to watch for.
Home Care
How Should I Care For My Little One At Home?
For illnesses that don't require same-day attention, clear guidance is given on managing symptoms at home, including when paracetamol or fluids are appropriate and what changes would mean a follow-up visit is needed. Parents are never left guessing about the next step, and a follow-up call is always an option if something feels unclear.

What Happens If My Child Needs To Be Admitted?
If a child needs a higher level of care, admission and specialist referral are arranged without delay. Dr Angela remains involved throughout, working alongside the hospital team. See hospital and inpatient care for more on what this involves.

When Should You Seek Further Care?
Most acute illnesses settle with the right care at home, but some warning signs need urgent attention. It is worth seeking help promptly if your child has:
- 1A persistent or high fever
- 2Difficulty breathing or unusual sleepiness
- 3Repeated vomiting or signs of dehydration
- 4Severe pain, seizures or a concerning rash
For anything more serious, such as severe breathing difficulty, blue discolouration or a prolonged seizure, go straight to your nearest emergency department.
